Are Standardbreds like Thoroughbreds? |

Standardbreds are like Thoroughbreds in that they are both specifically bred for racing. Thoroughbreds however are raced under saddle, while Standardbreds are raced harnessed to a sulky, so they are driven not ridden. Standardbreds are also not 'hot' like Thoroughbreds, are generally calmer, less exciteable, more willing, are better do-ers, and have less chance of long term serious injuries compared to Thoroughbreds. Standardbreds generally have better mouths than off the track Thoroughbreds who are trained to basically 'point and shoot' at full speed, whereas Standardbred racing involves manouvering and tactics that require responsiveness to the bit and rein directions. Standardbreds are often a better choice for first time or nervous owners/riders than OTTTB's.
