Why do Standardbreds have ewe necks? |

|
Standardbreds off the track tend to look like they have ewe necks and are underweight due to the muscle development required to pace at speed in harness. Racing standardbreds develop muscles along the bottom line - the thighs, shoulders, along the barrel and underside of the neck - these muscles are directly opposite to the topline muscles that are developed on a riding horse along the rump, back, withers and neck. This lack of topline is not a comformation fault, simply muscle development that with work and training can be reversed to develop the 'topline' of a riding horse.
